At a cemetery, lives are comemorated, deaths are recorded, families are reunited, memories are made tangible and love is undisguised.  Communities accord respect, families bestow reverence, historians seek information and our heritage is thereby enriched.
Testimonies of devotion, pride and remembrance are carved in stone to pay warm tribute to accomdplishments and to the life - not death - of a loved one.  The cemetery is homeland for family memorials that are a sustaining source of comfort to the living.

A cemetery is a history of people; a perpetual record of yesterday and a sanctuary of peace and quiet today.  A cemetery exists because every life is worth remembering - always.

As a convenience we have included a listing of many of the local cemeteries in our area. A growing number of cemeteries are beginning to publish their own web sites to allow visitors to learn more about their services, fees and applicable bylaws.

Written for the original transcription in 1983: Ford Cemetery is a “border cemetery”, its stone records documenting early families of Aldborough Township, Elgin County and Orford Township, Kent County. The large MacCall stone (#111) also documents familial ties to the Wigle and Kratz/Scratch families of Essex County. In Orford’s Story 1827-1977 (compiled as part of the Sesquicentennial Celebration of the first town meeting, 1827, edited by Charles L. D. McLaren) on pages 48 and 49 appear the names from the official patent records of land owners of Orford Township whose final resting places are to be found in Ford Cemetery. On page 61, of the above publication, additional information is found which states that Ford Cemetery was used before a burying ground was established at Duart, Orford Township, Kent County. Tradition has Ford Cemetery dating from 1823 with the internment of Mary Ann, only daughter of Thomas and Altha Ford. However, in the Register of Baptisms, Marriages & Deaths at St. Thomas, U.C. commencing with the establishment of the mission in July 1824 (Ontario Historical Society Papers and Records, Volume IX [1910] page 129), the children of Thomas & Altha Ford - William, Mary Ann, Robert, David and Henry - were baptized 9 September 1824 by Reverend Alexander Mackintosh, Rector and Missionary. The Ford Cemetery derives its name from the Ford farm upon whose land it is situated: Concession 12, Lot B, North Talbot Road (NTR) Survey, Aldborough Township, Elgin County. Brief History of the Ford Family: Circa 1808 Thomas Ford (c1774-1844) emigrated from Edinburgh, Scotland to Vermont, U.S.A., with two small children and his second wife who died shortly after their arrival. While still in Vermont, Thomas Ford married Altha Sheppard (c1792-1869). They moved to New York State where Thomas engaged in the brewery business. At the outbreak of the War of 1812, Thomas was pressed into service for the American cause. After the war, circa 1817, he moved his family to Upper Canada and settled on today’s Lot B, Concession 12, NTR, Aldborough Township, Elgin County, securing the title to this land from Colonel Talbot on 27th February 1824. On July 30, 1844, Thomas Ford died and was interred in the Ford Cemetery.

Churchville Evangelical Cemetery - est. 1875 In 1845 Germans of the Evangelical faith started to settle in Aldborough Township. During 1860 the Rev. Henry Sauer travelled on foot or horseback from Willoughby Township, near Fort Erie to hold services in Churchville. The first church was built in 1860 on the corner of Middle Street and Kerr Road and replaced by a larger one in 1876. On Saturday evening, September 19, 1948 the tall steeple was struck by lightning and the church burned to the ground. The Evangelical Cemetery was established in 1875 for members and adherents of the Rodney and Churchville congregations. In January of 1968 the Evangelical United Brethren Church became a part of the United Church of Canada.

St. Henry's cemetery lies just west of the Kerr Road on Thomson Lin (concession 11, lot 12) just behind St. Henry's church. It is barely visible from the road. This was the first Roman Catholic cemetery in Aldborough township. In addition, the church on the same lot, St. Henry's Roman Catholic Church, was the first Catholic Church. The land was donated by Regina Schnekenburger, the widow of Henry (Heinrich) Schnekenburger. At the time of his death, March 18, 1867, the closest Roman Catholic cemetery and church was North American Martyrs in Wardsville. Henry is interred there. Immediately after his death, Regina donated the land. The first person buried there was Frederic Pichette, who died in 1874.

History of Rodney Cemetery On August 24, 1895, A. J. Liebner called a meeting of the ratepayers of the Village of Rodney to consider the advisability of purchasing land for a new cemetery as three and ½ acres were available on Queen Street West, part of the north half of lots 5 and 6 on Eighth Concession of Aldborough and owned by O. R. G. Stinson. Persons attending were N. S. Lusty, T. C. Campbell, A. J. Liebner, J. B. Campbell, E. A. Hugill, O.R.G. Stinson, J. J. Mistele, D. H. McRitchie and H. F. Jeff. A company was formed known as the Rodney Cemetery Company and the land purchased from O. R. G. Stinson for the sum of $350, each member of the company donating $25 as capital stock. At a special meeting on December 9, 1895, Peter McArthur was paid $30 for labor stumping, plowing and leveling ground on condition that he purchase a lot in the cemetery at set price, which he did. Lot prices were set at $10 -$8 - $5, according to their location. Mr. John Patterson was appointed sexton and given contract of opening graves at $2 per grave. On January 21, 1896, O.R.G. Stinson was elected president; T.C. Campbell, treasurer; E. A. Hugill, secretary, for one year. Later at a meeting on August 31, 1896, each shareholder was credited with one $10 lot each. On January 18, 1897, a new slate of officers was elected: A. J. Liebner, president, and re-elected treasurer T. C. Campbell and secretary E. A. Hugill. These officers remained in office continuously until Mr. Hugill moved to Toronto. Mr. Campbell passed away and Mr. Liebner died August 14, 1939. Directors for 1898 were O.R.G. Stinson, N. S. Lusty, J. J. Mistele, F. A. McCallum, A. J. Liebner, T. C. Campbell, J. B. Campbell, and D. H. McRitchie, and the principal officers same as 1897. On January 29, 1890 the Board of Directors and officers were re-elected and an 8% dividend declared. Improvements to the grounds continued yearly and on May 5, 1905 the first reference was made to any equipment being bought and a lawn mower being purchased from J. A. McLean for $10; a dividend on the 10% of capital stock was declared. In 1911 a well was completed on the site and in 1918 prices of lots were again increased to $15 - $8 - $5. In 1922 lots went to $15 - $12 - $10. F. A. McCallum replaced T. C. Campbell was secretary in 1925 following his death. In 1927 Mrs. E. J. Schmid and Mrs. J. G. Gillies proposed the building of a new fence and Memorial Arch, representing the Women’s Institute. In 1934 evergreens were purchased and planted on each side except on either side of the front entrance. Gordon Stinson succeeded F. A. McCallum as secretary in 1946 and served for 37 years to 1983.

This pioneer cemetery lies just east of New Glasgow on the south side of Talbot Road, specifically lot 7, concession 13, Aldborough Township. A plaque, hanging on the concrete wall which borders the cemetery is decorated with Scotch thistles in the upper corners and reads as follows: "This is the first cemetery in the district where rest many pioneers of Aldborough and adjoining townships, who migrated from the Scotland highlands in 1817, and also those who followed later from other parts. It is recorded that is 1818 Dugald McLarty and James Ruthven, who were drowned as they attempted to land at what is now Port Glasgow were the first two white people buried here. May we be worthy of the sacrifice, faith and vision of our pioneer forefathers whose memory today we delight to honour and desire to perpetuate." Dugald McLarty and James Ruthven were the first white people to be buried in this cemetery. These two men were drowned bringing supplies to shore from a sailing ship anchored just off shore. A small row boat, used for this task, was upset in a squall with the men drowning, witnessed by many helpers both women and children who were in shore at Knoc Nealliadh. At one time, prior to the restoration of the cemetery it was called MacDiarmid's Burial Grounds. Others in the mid 1800's to beburied there were Alexander Gray, died April 12, 1879; Catherine McLarty, his wife died Aug. 2, 1881; Donald Gray, their son, died in 1859 at 26 1/2 years of age. These are mentioned because they were the last living group who came to Canada in 1818. Dugald McLarty was survived by his three sons and a daughter, Catherine. The latter had been married in the old country to Alexander Gray, then emigrated to Canada on their honeymoon.
